Your septic tank is responsible for digesting organic matter and separating solid waste and scum from wastewater. With such an important role to play in the overall septic system, your tank needs to remain in good condition—and you need to address septic tank problems right away. But how do you know when you have septic tank problems? There are several telltale signs.

Telltale Signs of Septic Tank Problems

  • Gurgling Drains – If the drains in your home are gurgling or slow, there could be a clog in your plumbing system as a result of septic tank overload. The clog will need to be removed and the septic tank will need to be pumped if this is the case.
  • Standing Water – Standing water in your yard, especially near the septic tank or drain field, is often a sign of septic tank problems. There may be a leak causing effluent to seep into the ground and pool in your yard.
  • Lush Grass – Effluent from your septic tank contains nitrogen, phosphorous, and other nutrients that help plants grow. So, while lush, green grass might be nice, the fact that it is fertilized by wastewater coming from a leaking tank is not.
  • Foul Odors – You should not smell foul sewage odors in your home or around your yard if your septic tank is working correctly. We can inspect your system, provide maintenance or pumping, and recommend repairs if necessary.
  • Septic Backups – Of all the telltale signs of septic tank problems, septic backups are the most obvious and serious. Sewage backing up through your drains is a health hazard, so you will need to call professionals for service right away.
